Summary: | <b>Abstract</b><p align=\"justify\"> Caesium-134 uptake by grasses have been studied to determine biological indicator of environmental radioactivity around P3TkN surrounding. Three species of grasses, elephant grass (Pennisetum polystachyon), wire grass (Eleusin indica), and carpet grass (Cynodon dactilon), each were grown in a container filled with soil with 2 MBq of caesium-134. As control, each of grasses were grown on soil without caesium-134 contamination. The soil used in this study was determined for its chemistry, physical, and texture. The uptake of caesium-134 was observed by measuring caesium-134 activity in root, stem and leaf once a week for two months. The activity was done by HPGe detector, and then the data was analized by a calculation to obtain transfer coefficient, concentration, and bioconcentration factor. The results of soil parameter analysis are pH=6,71; potasium content=3,024%, caesium content-not detected, porosity=0,714; bulk density =2,205 gram/cm3; particle density= 0,76 gram/cm<usp>3; specific grafity= 2,39; water content-15,914% and texture is clay. Transfer coefficient of elephant grass, wire grass, and carpet grass are 2,577.10-7 1/ days (0?t?28 days) and 1,317.10-7ys (28<t?56 days); 4,445.10-7days (0<t?42 days) and 2,288.10-8 1/ days (42<t?56 days); 1,5480.10-8 1/days (05?t?35 days) and 7,916.10-9 1/ days (35<t?56 days), respectively. The concentrations are 56,166; 14,480; and 23,182 Bq/dry weight. Bioconcentration factor of each grasses are: 0,351; 0,104; and 0,147. From the evaluation it can be concluded that elephant grass is the most suitable grass for biological indicator of environmental radioactivity around P3TkN because its bioconcentration factor is higher than wire grass and carpet grass. |
