Abstract :

Intercropping is a kind of multiple cropping that gives more ecological benefit compared to monoculture. However, farmers generally like to cultivate in monoculture, because they believe it is economically more profitable. This research was conducted to investigate the effect of intercropping between tomato and bitter guard on growth and yield of the plants. The experiment used replacement-series method (de Witt, 1960) with split plot design. The soil medium for growth was aluvial type (from Soreang) and andosol type (from Lembang).

Planting was conducted with different density combination with total density of 4; 8; 12; and 16. Each density was planted with different five planting combination (monoculture and intercropping). Observation was conducted for 2,5 months until the plants were not productive any more. The result showed that reproductive phase of tomato was achieved at 43 days for aluvial soil and andosol soil; and bitter guard achieved at 43 days for aluvial soil and 48 days for andosol soil. The best yield of bitter guard was achieved at andosol soil with density combination of 16 (8:8), and amount of fruits and seeds were 6 and 118respectively. However, in monocultur of bitter guard at aluvial soil and andosol soil with density combination of 16 (0:16) produced no fruit. Intercropping produced better growth and yield compared to monoculture. |
