To transport the coal from production site to sales point, BAA relies on the using of Barge (tongkang) from vendor that sail from upstream river to the sea. During dry season, the barge can’t sail if water level doesn’t meet minimum water level. The focus of this research is the analysis of root cause of unavailability to ship, and will identify the root causes and recommended solution to improve the condition. The research will employ qualitative method to obtain information and opinions from various company stakeholders via interview. Root cause analysis is identified based on information obtained from interview, extracted into keyword. Root causes then validated through literature studies. And to reach the conclusion of the issue and recommendation, beside from interview result and initial literature review, second literature is also conducted which is based on similar situation happened in other company or case. The dominant issues inferred from the research are barge is not available at request due to barge is chartered on-demand and not dedicated, and also barge is unable to sail due to river water level is too low for barge load, barge can’t sail due to possibility of agrounding. Thus, as recommended solution, company should conduct cost benefit analysis to calculate the cost for renting dedicated barge against renting barge on call that will be ready for use at anytime, company can consider to reduce the load of shipment so that the barge will be able to sail when water level is low, employ real-time water level detector, and managing safety stock for backup of coal inventory. text |
