STUDY OF SIGNIFICANCE INFLUENCES OF VARIABLES AND EXPERIMENTAL OPTIMIZATION USING ANOVA AND TAGUCHI METHODS FOR SEPARATION OF TITANIUM FROM IRON IN HYDROCHLORIC SOLUTION BY SOLVENT EXTRACTION WITH TRIBUTYL PHOSPHATE

Ilmenite (FeTiO3) is one of byproducts of tin ore beneficiation in Bangka Island which has a potential for usage as primary raw material of TiO2 pigment and titanium metal. The content of TiO2 in ilmenite mineral ranges from 30% to 65%. One of the titanium extraction methods through hydrometallurgic...

INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/51412 Ilmenite (FeTiO3) is one of byproducts of tin ore beneficiation in Bangka Island which has a potential for usage as primary raw material of TiO2 pigment and titanium metal. The content of TiO2 in ilmenite mineral ranges from 30% to 65%. One of the titanium extraction methods through hydrometallurgical route is by leaching in hydrochloric acid. During leaching in hydrochloric acid solution, iron in the ilmenite mineral dissolves in a large quantity. The purification route that has been effectively proven to separate titanium from iron is solvent extraction. In this study, solvent extraction by using TBP as extractant to separate titanium from iron in pregnant leach solution resulted from Bangka Ilmenite leaching in hydrochloric acid media was studied. Analysis by the ANOVA and Taguchi methods were carried out to determine the significance influence and contribution of extraction variables as well as to optimum condition for separation of Fe and Ti. The experimental work began with the preparation, sampling, and characterization of the initial ilmenite sample by X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analyses. The aqueous solution used in the solvent extraction experiment is the solution resulted from acid leaching of ilmenite sample in HCl 8M at 90°C with solid percentage of 10 for 4 hours. A series of solvent extraction experiment was designed by the Taguchi orthogonal array L'9 (34), that uses 4 leaching variables, each with 3 levels. The variables studied in the solvent extraction experiments are temperature, volume ratio of organic solution to aqueous solution (O/A), concentration of TBP (v/v), and extraction time. Meanwhile, iron stripping experiment of loaded organic was conducted under variation of the volume ratio of aqueous solution to organic solution (A/O). Concentration of Fe and Ti in aqueous phase were measured using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). The experimental results showed that all of the variables of extraction have significant influence on separation factor of iron and titanium with the highest contribution is O/A with contribution of 44.72%, followed by temperature with contribution of 21.08%, extraction time with contribution of 20.27% and TBP concentration with contribution of 13.80%. Optimum condition of extraction was obtained at 25±2°C, O/A 1, TBP concentration 90% for 15 minutes, with iron and titanium extraction percentages of 99.99% and 1.84%, respectively, DFe 7378, DTi 0,0187, and ?Fe-Ti 394185. Meanwhile the optimum condition for iron stripping was obtained at room temperature by using distilled water as stripping agent with volume ratio of aqueous solution to organic solution of 4/1 for 30 minutes that resulted in Fe stripping percentage of 91.60%. text
