THE DESIGN OF CLOTH DIAPER RINSING MACHINE TO SUPPORT REDUCTION OF HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE IN BANDUNG

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) that dominates in the city of Bandung is disposable diaper waste which the production reaches 26% of the total HHW. The use of disposable diapers has negative impacts on the environment, human and animal health, as well as economic impacts. Efforts have been made by individuals and NGOs to deal with disposable diaper waste, but the use of those efforts have been made to only extend the time of the waste cycle to get to the landfill and have not yet resolved the problem of reducing the production of disposable diaper wastes themselves. One solution to this problem is that people use cloth diapers as substitutes for disposable diapers. However, in practice, to maintain the quality of cloth diapers takes many steps in their care and knowledge of washing cloth diaper standards, where disposable diapers have practical advantages in their use. This study aims to find an effort to simplify the process of using cloth diapers, especially in the cleaning process through literature studies on cloth diapers and washing precedents in the household, then interviews with sources of babysitters at the orphanage and baby daycare, along with product design analysis. The research output is the design of a cloth diaper rinsing machine. Product solutions are expected to be useful to facilitate the process of flushing feces on cloth diapers so that the use of cloth diapers becomes a continuous, effective, and certainly as a step to support the reduction of HHW production in the city of Bandung.
