STUDY OF INDONESIAN COAL CHARACTERISTICS TO HELP PROSPECTING THE COAL UTILIZATION

Coal is a mining commodity with various uses. Indonesian coal mostly used as fuel (steam coal) or used as raw material for steel industry (coking coal). Both steam coal and coking coal have their own distinct quality spesification, depends on their respective utilization proccess. In order for coal to be utilised according to its quality optimally, coal samples need to be tested. The choosen coal samples come from various coal bearing formation, Batu Ayau Formation and Tanjung Formation in Barito Basin, Balikpapan Formation in Kutai Formation, dan Muara Enim Formation in North Sumatra Basin. The series of test including proximate test, ultimate test, calorific value measuring, FSI (Free Swelling Index) test, and maseral analysis. The result of those quality test will reflecting the coalification degree of samples. Coal that had undergone coalification through subbituminous rank with typical of Gross Calorific Value around 5000 kcal/kg (ar), water content under 36% (ar), ash content under 15% (adb), and sulfur content under 0,9% (adb) is suitable to be used as steam coal. Meanwhile, coal that had undergone coalification through bituminous rank with typical water content under 15% (adb), ash content under 12% (adb), sulfur content under 1% (adb) is suitable to be used as coking coal.
