Indonesia is a country rich in natural and cultural wealth where traditional dance, music, tradition, and languages spread widely in the entire country. One of the cultural objects is in the form of Torajan carved motifs. Torajan carved motifs is a carved motif on the bodies of Tongkonan and Alang buildings. The variety of the motifs’ symbols have their own meanings and philosophies employed in the daily life of Torajan people. As the technology and lifestyles grow and develop, traditional cultures such as Torajan carved motifs have gradually become underused in daily life, and as a result not many people know about the culture. Based on that fact, one of the most effective efforts to preserve Torajan carved motifs in the modern age is to implement them into an experimental typography in the form of a book. The experimental typography book “Torajan Passura Type” can be used as a solution in one of the efforts to preserve Torajan carved motifs. The book mustered introduction to the motifs up to the results of the experiment, complete with character’s descriptions, type specimens, and their applications to various media. Interviews and literature studies are implemented as research methods. The experimental design expected to be accepted by modern society, especially design and cultural practitioners and enthusiasts, simultaneously plays a role as an archive of Torajan culture, specifically their motifs.
