Description
Summary:Abstract :

One of the problem of coal resources in Barru Regency, South Sulawesi is the high content of sulphur and ash. This causes constraints in the benefication of coal.

Coal bearing formation in this area is Mallawa Formation (Eocene), consist of quartz sandstones, sandstones with thin layer coal, siltstones, daystones, and conglomerates. The sedimentation environment is estimated to be the shallow marine (Sukamto, 1982).

To achieve the objective of the research, a microscopical analysis on mineral (particularly pyrite and its behaviour) and maceral, and an analysis of ash content, as well as an analysis on sulphur content were carried out. The result of the microscopical analysis on pyrite was used to find out the form, type, and origin of the pyrite. The analysis on ash and sulphur content was intended to help determine the chwacteristics of coal. The maceral analysis was used to reconstruct fades of coal (fades diagram by Diessel 1992). The result of the microscopical analysis on pyrite shows that there is pyrite in framboidal form, so that the coal in the area being studied is interpreted as sedimented in the marine or brackish area.

Based on the TPI (tissue preservation index) and GI (gelification index) value in the fades diagram by Diessel, 1992, it is interpreted that the coal layer in the area was sedimented in the marsh area.
