PREDICTION OF LAND SUBSIDENCE DUE TO PT. XYZ LONGWALL COAL MINING PANEL USING EMPIRICAL METHOD AND NUMERICAL METHOD

In underground coal mining, one of the methods used is the Longwall method. Longwall mining is caving method. Intermediate roof of mine-out panels are allowed to collapse. The caving has posibility give an effect to the surface subsidence that could endanger the infrastructure in the subsidence area...

INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/51653 In underground coal mining, one of the methods used is the Longwall method. Longwall mining is caving method. Intermediate roof of mine-out panels are allowed to collapse. The caving has posibility give an effect to the surface subsidence that could endanger the infrastructure in the subsidence area. According to this, it is necessary to have an analysis to predict a subsidence and the characteristics of the subsidence. There are three things in the characteristics of an subsidence, which include the maximum value of an subsidence, the area of subsidence, and the subsidence profile. Therefore, by predicting a subsidence and its characteristics, the mining process can be more paid-attention to avoid subsidence that endangers the infrastructure and other components above the mine. To predict the subsidence, two general methods were used, namely the empirical method using the UK National Coal Board and the finite element numerical method using the Phase2 software. The study showed there are some differences of the results between the empirical method and numerical method. Numerical method has a milder maximum subsidence value, wider surface subsidence, and bigger angle of draw compared to the empirical method. Meanwhile, the subsidence profile by numerical method with soft material produces a smaller maximum subsidence, a larger width of subsidence, and a larger angle of draw compared to numerical models without soft material. text
