Description
Summary:Hypertension is one of the most prevalent cardiovascular disease in Indonesia. Beside conventional drugs, natural sources could be used as an alternative in treatment of hypertension. Plants that have been used traditionally in folk medicine to deal with hypertension are pepper elder (Peperomia pellucida (L.) Kunth and watercress (Nasturtium officinale R. Br). Previous studies found that both plants have potentials to lower blood pressure level through inhibition of Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE). This study aims to determine the effect of combination of both plants to the blood pressure of dexamethasone-induced Wistar rats. Blood pressures were measured by non-invasive CODA® tail-cuff blood pressure system on the day prior to induction, after induction, and throughout therapy until day-5. The result of this study showed that there is significant decrease within the group captopril 13,5 mg/kg bw, concentrated juice of pepper elder 30 mg/kg bw, concentrated juice of watercress 45 mg/kg bw, combination dose 1:1 (concentrated juice of pepper elder 30 mg/kg bw and watercress 45 mg/kg bw) and combination dose ½:½ (concentrated juice of pepper elder 15 mg/kg bw and watercress 22,5 mg/kg bw) on the fourth day of therapy in comparisons to the blood pressure after induction. Study also showed that the effect of combination dose 1:1 and combination dose ½:½ are equivalent to each other (p<0,05). Thus, it can be concluded that concentrated juice of pepper elder 30 mg/kg bw, concentrated juice of watercress 45 mg/kg bw and its combinations have in-vivo antihypertensive activities.
