Summary: | The e-KTP corruption case in 2017 that dragged Setya Novanto made it a public discussion, including mass media like Tempo Magazine on its cover. Tempo Magazine uses illustrated images on each release, they have a character with a unique visual styling on each cover and often cause controversy. In addition, the illustrated images on the cover of this magazine also have hidden meanings and codes that need to be interpreted deeply. Therefore, this study aims to be able to explain the structure of the visual signs on the cover illustration of the September-November 2017 edition of Tempo Magazine in Setya Novanto's e-KTP corruption case. In addition, this research is also intended to be able to reveal the codes contained in the cover illustrations of Tempo Magazine. This research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive interpretative analysis techniques. The method is visual semiotics with Roland Barthes’s theory including the structure of visual signs and Five Codes. The researcher concluded that the visual sign structure of the four covers of Tempo Magazine under study was composed with signifiers that produced a meaning about the politician Setya Novanto who tried with dramatic ways to escape the entanglement of corruption cases and involving other parties. In addition, the conventional codes revealed through the Barthes Five Codes show the efforts related to the e-KTP corruption case at that time, both Setya Novanto as a suspect, the KPK as law enforcer, and other parties involved when the law enforcement process was carried out.
