Indonesia Theses INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/5174 Abstract :
Handoff in a mobile cellular communications will become an important issue as cell sizes shrink to accommodate an increasingly large demand for services. In small cell, the probability of handoff attempt will increase and consequently tend to increase the probability of handoff failure.

The probability of unsuccesfull handoff can be minimize by giving priority to handoff call. This thesis researched on performance of three handoff priority methods used queuing of handoff request, i.e. queuing of handoff request by FIFO discipline, queuing of handoff request by Signal Prediction Priority Queuing (SPPQ) and SPPQ+G(1) or SPPQ with one guard channel. As complement, we also investigate the channel reservation method Guard(1), reservation with one guard channel without queuing of handoff request.

The research of these methods will be done by simulation in various cell radius (100 m, 300 m and 1000 m) and various handoff call-to-total call ratio (25%, 50% and 75%). At each condition we will choice the method with the best performance. The best performance method is the method which has the highest traffic-to-channel ratio and has the probability of handoff dropping 0,5 % at 2% of new call blocking probability. This prerequirements are agree with ITU-T recommendation E.771.

The simulation result show that the method which is able to minimize handoff dropping probability lower than others, would got higger new call blocking probability and consequently decrease the traffic-tochannel ratio. By considering the standard value for blocking and dropping probability above and choosing the highest traffic-to-channel ratio, we found that SPPQ+G(1) is the best method at cell radius 100 m. While at cell radius 300 m and 1000 m, SPPQ has the best performance, except at cell radius 1000 m and handoff call ratio 75% the best method is Guard(1). text
