Description
Summary:Malassezia furfur is an opportunistic fungus that belongs to skin microflora, this fungus is often found in dandruff hair. One of the active compounds that has been known to have activity to inhibit the growth of Malassezia sp. is xanthorrhizol, which is an identity compound in java turmeric rhizome (Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb.). This study aims to develop the antidandruff shampoo formulation of java turmeric extract. The research scope consists of literature review related to liquid shampoo in general, determination of the antifungal activity of extract, general evaluation of shampoos, determination of anti-dandruff shampoo activity, the potential toxicity from the materials used, as well as the potential for discoloration of extract. The following steps of the experiments have been carried out, including the simplicia characterization, preparation and phytochemical screening of the extract, process optimization and shampoo base formula optimization qualitatively, and color simulation test of the extract in the sampo qualitatively. From the simplicia characterization, there are starch grain, cortical parenchyma, vascular tissue, sclerenchyma fiber, and cork tissue on microscope testing, water content 5,00±0,00%, water-soluble extractive 15,44±0,54%, ethanol-soluble extractive 21,28±0,42%, total ash content 5,63±0,15%, and lost on drying 2,86±2,83%. In the ethanol extract of java turmeric rhizome, flavonoid, quinone, and triterpenoid were detected. The base liquid cream shampoo formula which has the best homogeneity and viscosity consists of 20% SLES, 3% CAPB, 3% NaCl, 2% glycol distearate, and 2% dimethicone, but the resulting foam is not satisfactory. From the process optimization with ultraturrax, the optimum results are obtained at a speed of 8000 rpm for 10 minutes. No data were found on the results of research on the antifungal activity of java turmeric rhizome extract against Malassezia furfur, only data on the antifungal activity of the isolate was found with MIC 1,25 µg/mL dan MFC 5 µg/mL. The shampoo ingredients used in the study have low potential for eye and skin irritation.
