Description
Summary:Air pollution is an important problem that has not been resolved. Air pollution has a negative impact on the health of the human respiratory system and the environment. Air pollution contains aerosol particles. These particles are so small that they cannot be directly seen by the eye. To study aerosol particles, we need an instrument that can measure the particle size distribution. The instrument commonly used is Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS). SMPS consists of Differential Mobility Analizer (DMA), Condensation Particle Counter (CPC), and charger. Charger are used to charge aerosol particles. The type of charger used on SMPS is built using the radioactive and the corona method. The radioactive method requires quite expensive costs and difficult maintenance. The method commonly used to build a charger is the corona method. Although this method is more commonly used, corona method can produce ozone particles which have a negative impact on human health. In this study, a charger was developed using inexpensive commercial material, the MHM305 and MHM 400 ionizers. This ionizer was built using the corona method. The amount of ozone produced in this module is only 0.14mg / hour. The ion concentration produced by the charger is calculated using an ion counter. The concentration of ions produced by the ionizer are -1,563 × 106 (total charge / cm3) and 2,515 × 106 (total charge / cm3). To control the amount of ions produced by the charger, the duty cycle value at the ionizer input voltage is controlled. The greater the value of the duty cycle used, the more number of ions produced. Polystyrene Latex (PSL) in this study was used as a test particle which particle diameter distribution was measured using SMPS. The PSL particle size used are 190 nm and 303 nm. From the tests that have been done, the ionizer works well as a charger on SMPS.
