Preloading is applied to reduce the consolidation settlement of a structure due to design load, while vertical drain is used to decrease the time of primary consolidation by decreasing the length of the consolidation drainage path. <br /> <br /> The thesis studies the deformations of Dam Sei Rempang, Batam Island, Indonesia. The dam is an earth dam that has built on soft foundation soil. The height of the dam is 7m with the crest with of 8m. Because of limited bearing capacity in the soft clay foundation, the construction was constructed gradually in several stages. Vertical drainages were installed during the construction. Finite Element code Plaxis, has been employed to predict the development of the excess pore water pressures due to each construction loading and the subsequent dissipation of these excess pore water pressures through consolidation. The code was developed based on Biot\'s consolidation theory in which the deformation was coupled with the dissipation of the excess pore water pressures. The Soft Soil and The Mohr Coulomb models were used to describe the behavior of the soil. The implemented of the Biot\'s theory into the finite element method and the procedure to analyze vertical drains were studied in this thesis. The increase of shear strength of the soil due to dissipation of the excess pore water pressures caused by construction loading was also studied. <br /> <br /> The results of this study shows that: a) the deformations of the soil and the excess pore water pressures predicted by Plaxis are comparable with those obtained by monitoring systems, b) the best procedure to analyze vertical drain is by changing the permeability of the soil in the horizontal deformation, while the geometry is kept constant and c) the formula proposed by Skempton (1957) gives the least increment of the shear strength of the soil. text
