Summary: | The embodiment of place is the process of expressing and giving concrete form to
the idea of an abskact place. The act of transforming abstract ideas into tangible
products has many factors affecting its manifestation. Due to its absurd nature, the
place can only be observed from the expression of its constituent element. The place
has meaning, creates a sense ofbelonging, and has a human scale. The existence of
a place requires its strength from its community, being in the right space, carrying
out certain activities at the right time, and being supported by culture.
Vernacular settlements are influenced by belief systems. The use of local materials
and technology, and people's understanding of their natural environment which is
closely related to their ancestral cultwal heritage. The Balinese Aga Pengotan
customary settlement is characterized by its spatial saucture which is composed of
consistent spatial planning principles that are influenced by the values adopted and
their understanding of the surrounding environment, but their meanings may vary
according to their needs and functions.
This dissertation aims to reveal the influence ofritual-behavior on the embodimenl
of piace in the vernacular settlement of Bali Aga Pengotan by exploring physical
pattems and dtual behavior patiems. This research uses a qualitative approach with
descriptive and exploratory studies to understand and be able to describe the
concept of a place that occurs by looking at phenomena in the field, documenting
existing conditions, observing the use of space in the field, then verifring it through
interviews. with space users. The collected data were analyzed using the Observing
Physical Trace (OPT) and Observing Environmental Behavior (OEB) methods
which were then analyzed repeatedly according to the number of available
activities. The results of the analysis were interpreted by reading the relationship
between physical patterns and ritual behavior pattems. The interpretation was
carried out immediateiy after data collection and initial analysis was complete.
Verification is meant to enrich the data, but it can also be a process of simplifying
or focusing data. The data that has been obtained and analyzed in the initial process
is used as a reference in firther data collection until the data is saturation.

The results showed that the embodiment of a place in the vemacular settlement of
Baii Aga Pengotan is a process of forming a place that aims to create the spirit ofa
place with l) the settlement is designed based on local cosmological lnderstanding,
2) the place is created by the existence of a worship object as a centef of orientation
and activity. , 3) spatial attdbutes are used as markers lhat give character, and 4)
community organizations are formed to maintain the continuity of the tradition.
Cosmology is a very dominant factor influencing not only physical settlements but
also on community life and activities in addition to the social struchtre and ritual
activities held. The object of worship as the main element, movement, and costume
of the performer, as well as fumiture and decoration, are elements of the
embodiment of a place that can be tmderstood and felt. |
