Description
Summary:This dissertation aims to explore characterizations in animated films. The characterizations are interesting to study, considering that they contain ideas about the animated film itself. Two animated films shown on television are Adit Sopo Jarwo and Keluarga Somat, which focus on showing the life of Indonesian society. Both of these animated films carry the theme of ethnicity. The classic theme shows the pluralism of the Indonesian nation, so that its excess is that there are also diversity. These two animated films try to show the facts about these differences with a humorous approach. The role of ethnicity is considered important in realizing national unity, so this topic is constantly being worked on. In particular, through the characters, and each roles in selected episodes. In the context of these two animated films, the existence of a character becomes a thematic center. This research was conducted to find the formation of identity caused by the fusion of culture in the characters, seen through the two selected animated films, based on the theory of believability. This theory is used to examine the treatments and qualities used to produce human-like figures. This similarity is seen based on two major aspects, namely the visualization and visuality of the characters. Visualization refers to the character's resemblance to humans and all the inherent attributes. While visuality is contextualized in the process of social vision. The characters interact with each other to form attitudes and actions that show their identity. This research was conducted using an ethnographic method so that the holistic sophistication of character creation was clearly legible. The use of this method leads to finding interesting things as follows. First, the consideration of visualization in character creation, coupled with character building through body shapes and facial elements. In both films, there is an effort to show physiognomic qualities that resemble real human faces. The two films take a different visual style approach. Adit Sopo Jarwo's film refers to a realistic visual style, while the Somat Family film refers to a cartoon visual style. However, there is an equal treatment when applying physiognomy to facial elements, namely the shape of the face, eyebrows, eyes, nose and mouth. The next section is a modification of body shape based on the Somatotype Personality Theory. There are additional visual stereotypes that refer to physiognomy combined with habits that are considered normative by society regarding characters. Second, the visual creation of a character leads to a meaning, in the form of an identity that is formed with visuality aspect, namely the involvement of ethnicity, religious systems, and language. These factors are added to complement the character's qualities to become more human-like. Even characters are shown to have a choice of attitudes towards other figures of different ethnicity. This leads to the third finding, that is the existence of a meaning to a character who is a unification or fusion of identity and cultural elements. At this stage there is an adjustment from cultural elements of the community to cultural elements in animated film characters. There is an interpretation of the meaning of multicultural identity in characters. This is due to external factors, such as cultural diversity, the Pancasila ideology which emphasizes religious life, togetherness, unity, based on law and justice. The growth and development of society produces syncretism towards cultural behavior and community belief systems. This can be seen in the part of the religious system that the concept of diversity is disguised as spirituality. So in this case there is a fusion of religious behavior with culture. Likewise regarding language, which used Indonesian, to avoid differences in perceptions in language use. However, there are efforts to add ethnic accent to strengthen the cultural identity of the figures. If it is returned to believability which emphasizes the similarity of the quality of fictional characters to humans, the concept of creation in the two selected films has shown the complexity of the creation. Based on the three findings of this dissertation, it can be explained that multiculturalism which is formed in selected figures also becomes an identity. So it can be stated that a multicultural identity has been formed in the animated film character Adit Sopo Jarwo and Keluarga Somat.
