In practice, however, the utilization of DCS technologies has not been optimal, and DCS based PID controller performances are not considered satisfactory. Such a practical situation often pushes the operator to change the operation mode of PID controller from auto to manual (manual loader). When faced with these phenomena, industrial people often see that problems arise from either: lack of human competence (operator) or lack of supporting technology. In this research project, we look at this problem from the perspective of human-machine interactions. <br /> <p align=\"justify\"> <br /> SPC (Statistical Process Control) was used in this research as a statistical tool to measure the operational performance of PID controller, and cybernetics theory was used to describe patterns of information flows through human-machine interactions. <br /> <p align=\"justify\"> <br /> Focus of the research was on the problem of controlling steam flow to Primary Reformer at Ammonia plant of Pusri-IB, which was operated, in general, in manual mode. Data was obtained from the plant, which was controlled in auto or manual mode. <br /> <p align=\"justify\"> <br /> The obtained results show that the value of process variable in auto-mode tends to be within the upper level of mean value. This means that there was over loaded condition occurred in the downstream process, as compared with manual mode operation. Cybernetics model of the auto-mode operation shows that this operation mode exhibits closed information loop, whereas the manual-mode exhibits an open information loop. From the results of the research two main conclusions can be drawn: (i) Human-machines interaction factor has significant effects on the patterns of information flows which, in turn, influence the regulation performance, (ii) cybernetics and SPC offer a potential analytical tool for technical assessment of industrial process automation performances. <br /> text
