Historically, the river had been used for settlement, trading, and transport activities. This phenomenon established the riparian culture that is deeply associated with the native residents who had been attached to the Musi River. However, along with rapid growth of land transportation, the trading’s orientation moved from river to land. People have shifted their water-based activities to land, as in Pasar 16 Ilir area. This area arises with historical significance and strong riparian culture, where these characteristics are not the focus of the urban tourism development plan. The attractions that were initiated earlier is similar to the characteristics of other places, with less involvement of local characters. Whereas the existence of a market area is also considered as a place for interaction, that cannot be separated from the local culture and the distinctive characteristics. This study is intentioned to capture the riparian culture characteristic, through the architectural phenomenology methods by Norberg Schulz, genius loci. The finding process aims to describe the meaning of the place, where each place has distinctive characters from other places. The results show that interactions between humans and rivers are generated the spirit of this place - essential to maintain the unique characteristics of the area. The results of this study will enhance the idea of design, where the concept of "recapturing the spirit of riparian culture" is explained into five elements that form the image of the area, namely path, edge, district, node, and landmark. The forming of the concept was carried out by dividing three different themes in each zone to narrate its uniqueness. text
