HIGH STRAIN RATE TENSILE TEST OF ST42 CARBON STEEL WITH AN IMPACT TENSILE MACHINE

When a collision occurs, a component will undergo a high strain rate loading. However, a lot of material properties known today are properties that are obtained at relatively low strain rate testing (quasi-static). To resolve the differences in material properties due to different strain rates, so t...

However, a lot of material properties known today are properties that are obtained at relatively low strain rate testing (quasi-static). To resolve the differences in material properties due to different strain rates, so this research is done. Preparation before doing this testing can be divided into three sections. The First is designing, manufacturing, and installation of impact tensile test (ITT) tools. The second is the loadcell manufacturing and linearity test. The third is specimen preparation. The tensile test is done using a specimen with and without a notch at high strain rate (impact strain rate) and low strain rate (quasi-static). The results obtained from this study are tensile strength, maximum elongation, and absorbed energy. At high strain rate, the presence of a notch will decrease tensile strength, decrease maximum elongation, and decrease absorbed energy. At low strain rate, the presence of a notch will increase tensile strength, decrease maximum elongation, and decrease absorbed energy. At a notched specimen, increasing strain rate will decrease tensile strength and decrease absorbed energy. At an unnotched specimen, increasing strain rate will increase tensile strength and decrease absorbed energy. text
