Ride quality is associated with how well a vehicle responds to vibrations concerning the sensation or feel of the passenger. The standardization of vehicle ride quality was first established by Maurice Olley, who was one of the founders of modern vehicle dynamics back in the 1930s, known as the Olley Criteria. The relevancy of the standard on today’s vehicles may be argued, but it is still considered to be valid guidelines even for modern vehicle design. The objectives of this research are to examine the suspension properties that define ride quality of a vehicle, carry out analysis on ride quality of a vehicle through experiment, and suggest optimizations for better ride quality. The speed bump experiment is developed to analyze the ride quality of a vehicle by evaluating its key suspension properties. The experiment is carried out by slowly driving the vehicle onto a speed bump creating an oscillation response that is recorded via an accelerometer. The vehicle observed in the experiment is a seven seater passenger car. The assessment of ride quality of the vehicle is done based on the guidelines referenced from the Olley Criteria. It is concluded that the ride quality of the observed vehicle is not well optimized, with some properties not valued as suggested. Unfortunately, there is not much modification that can be made to further optimize the ride quality of the observed vehicle. text |
