Summary: | The use of machining centers in the manufacturing industry plays an important role to
meet market demands for products with complex external geometries. Based on this role,
machining center performance needs to be maintained in the best condition. One of the main
indicators of machining center performance is the level of accuracy. The accuracy of machine
tools can be affected by geometric errors that occur in machine tool components, such as in
motion guidance systems. Geometric errors on the components of the motion guide system
will be translated into geometric errors on the workpiece during the machining process.
Standardized geometric specification tests, such as ISO 10791-2: 2001 can be utilized to
check the machining center geometric specifications. Geometric specifications that do not
conform the standards need to be followed up with corrective actions.
In this research, the straightness motion error correction procedures of the X-axis of
vertical machining center is formulated. The correction procedures are formulated based on
data modeling derived from research by Holub et al., 2015. The data modeling produces a
saddle surface profile where the linear guideways are mounted. The hand-scraping process is
used to correct the unevenness of the surface profile. VMC 500 machine is selected to
implement the correction procedure. Proposed correction procedure consist of Health, Safety,
and Environment (HSE) guidelines, recommendations for the number and qualifications of
workers, recommendations for equipment and materials, and corrective actions for motion
alignment errors from the X-axis. VMC 500 machine.
