According to WHO, Southeast Asia Regional has the highest burden on dengue fever. Since 1968, dengue fever cases in Indonesia continue to happen although lots of vector controlling actions have been done. One of the most common and easiest controlling methods is by using a mosquito repellent. The repellent products marketed in Indonesia are varied in terms of protection claims from the main ingredients. However, people seem not fully understand the importance of repellent application as dengue fever preventive action and the product effectivity on different mosquito's strain and age. Therefore, one of the purposes of this research are observing the level of people's perception and understanding regarding mosquito, repellent, and vector control; product acceptance level; and Willingness to Pay (WTP). Besides, this research will also analyze the affect of Aedes aegypti’s strain and age variations on some of the common-used repellent product's effectivity. People's condition was observed through Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices (KAP) Analysis; Product Acceptance; and WTP level; followed-up with vector control strategy analysis through Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and SWOT-AHP. Repellent effectivity test was conducted to 4 repellent products using 25 mosquitoes of Aedes aegypti with 4 strains and 3 ages variations using the arm-in-cage method.
The results show the score of Knowledge (8.66±2.113 out of 13), Attitude (2.384±0.542 out of 3) and Practices (3.524±0.582 out of 4) indicates a good level of understanding and perception although trying to understand complex information is a major problem. Knowledge-Attitude (0.031) and Attitude-Practices (0.027) has positive correlation which indicates good relation between people’s understanding to mosquito’s awareness and between the awareness and controlling practices. However, the Knowledge-Practices (-0.034) has negative correlation which implies that a good understanding does not always followed up by a good controlling practices. This situation might be triggered by differences in perceptions, low responsibility for dengue prevention practices, and the feeling of low or no perceived benefits in implementing these practices because there is no signs of mosquito population’s reduction. Natural-based repellent is more accepted by the user with a score of 3.402 out of 5 and portray a better image for a non-user with a score of 3 out of 5. WTP of product repellent is ranging between IDR 20,000-40,000. Vector controlling strategies was analyzed using Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) with priority should be focused on social (0.422) and economy (0.337) aspect, followed up with SWOT-AHP analysis resulting Strength-Opportunity (SO) (0.433) strategies: enhance on community empowerment with the help of training agents to reach more people in the neighborhood, create interesting program or media to deliver the substantial information in lighter way and easy to understand, and socialization at community activity centers as a direct action.
After understanding the perception and understanding characteristic, synthetic- and natural-based repellent are tested based on the repellency level (%R), the similarity between protection time and product claim, and the complete protection time (CPT). Autan product (DEET-based repellent) gives 100% protection up to 4 hours with minimum CPT of 340±34.64 minutes. Konicare product (lavender & geranium oil-based) has CPT of 3-16.33 minutes with protection up to 5 hours and protection at 0 hours at (58.24±4.96)-(62.00±20.14)%. Safecare product (eucalyptus oil-based) also has CPT of 3-16.33 minutes with duration protection closest to the product claim which is at 4 hours and protection at 0 hours (71.28±8.42)-(75.97±21.18)% for BDG, TSK, TGR strains. Lastly, Cussons product (citronella, eucalyptus, and chamomile oil-based) has the most even CPT (3 minutes) and protection graphic trend (3 hours) among all-four strains with protection at 0 hours (48.79±3.64)-(55.84±3.88)%. Cussons product is in lotion form which may gives the perfect thin and even layer of product that contributes to its protection's stability. Strain variation of Aedes aegypti affects the repellency level with a strong correlation (r = 0.580; p = 0.048<0.05) with BORA and BDG strains have similar trend, while TSK strains similar to TGR. TSK strain has the highest repellency among other strains (1.190 times compared to BORA). However, age variation does not directly influence the repellency level with a weak correlation (r = 0.107; p = 0.741>0.05).
