Summary:<b></i>Abstract :</b><i><p align="justify"> <br /> Mucoadhesive system containing a polymer combination of Carbopol 934P, Metolose 90SH-4.000 and Metolose 90SH-15.000 to obtain a sustained-release dosage form of atenolol had been studied. Result on dissolution test of atenolol from the mucoadhesive system showed a delay in water but not in 0.1 N hydrochloric acid medium. Addition of calcium carbonate up to 20% to the mucoadhesive system delayed the release of atenolol in 0.1 N hydrochloric acid medium. Wash off and in vitro bioadhesion tests of mucoadhesive granule adhered to the surface of rabbit stomach and intestine was better if Carbopol 934P was included in the system. No significant difference on the amount of mucoadhesive granule adhered to the surface of rabbit stomach and intestine.
