A house is a cultural phenomenon and an institution where values are reinforced. Its form and organization are influenced by the cultural milieu to which it belongs. The meanings of house become more than physical or utilitarian concept. The goal of this research is to explain how the social meanings of houses are reproduced in Kampung Kali Code (RT 11 RW 01, Kelurahan Kota Baru) Yogyakarta.<p align=\"justify\"> <br />
The understanding on meanings of house is reproduced as a spatial organization and reflected in human behavior. When people act their daily activities, they articulate their understanding on house through the manipulation of its components and the location of activities. In order to explain how the social meanings of houses are reproduced, the spatial organization of houses and behavior patterns are analyzed. An interpretation method are employed in order to find the relation between the phenomenon and social values as a background.<p align=\"justify\"> <br />
A Frame of meanings of house are reflected both in individual and communal daily activity pattern. Basic principles of social activities in culture of Java are employed in the daily activities. The principles of \"normal\" and \"rukun\" become a background and connect some different phenomena.<p align=\"justify\"> <br />
In daily activities, men and women has different ways in understanding the principles of \"hormat\" and \"rukun\". Men did it in formal and informal contrast and women did it more informaly. The result of this research point to social solidity, formed throughout their dwelling process, drive the implementation of principles of \"hormat\" and \"rukun\" in people activities and sustain it through the relations with other community since the housing is redesigned by YB Mangunwijaya and other volunteers. |
