STUDY OF INTEGRATED MEMBRANE TECHNOLOGIES APPLICATION IN LARGE SCALE PRODUCED WATER TREATMENT
Produced water is wastewater from the by-products of the oil and gas industry. Produced water can cause a detrimental effect on the environment due to its toxic compounds, salinity, and high volume. Therefore, produced water should be properly treated before discharged. Several technologies have...

Produced water can cause a detrimental effect on the environment due to its toxic compounds, salinity, and high volume. Therefore, produced water should be properly treated before discharged. Several technologies have been used in produced water treatment, either on a laboratory, pilot, or large/industrial scale. Produced water treatment generally consists of several stages, namely primary, secondary, and tertiary. In practices, the petroleum industry uses more than one technology to treat produced water. Integrated membrane technology is able to treat produced water with complex pollutant which cannot be removed by a single unit. Among the various technologies, membranes show promising potential for produced water treatment since they have relatively low cost and can improve the effluent quality significantly. However, fouling is still one of the main obstacles for membrane operations, especially in the treatment of oily wastewater such as produced water. There are several strategies to overcome the fouling issue, such as selecting the appropriate pre-treatment, operating membranes at optimum operating conditions, developing membranes with high hydrophilicity, and applying simple, effective, and low-cost cleaning procedure. text |

Produced water is wastewater from the by-products of the oil and gas industry.
Produced water can cause a detrimental effect on the environment due to its toxic
compounds, salinity, and high volume. Therefore, produced water should be
properly treated before discharged. Several technologies have been used in
produced water treatment, either on a laboratory, pilot, or large/industrial scale.
Produced water treatment generally consists of several stages, namely primary,
secondary, and tertiary. In practices, the petroleum industry uses more than one
technology to treat produced water. Integrated membrane technology is able to
treat produced water with complex pollutant which cannot be removed by a single
unit. Among the various technologies, membranes show promising potential for
produced water treatment since they have relatively low cost and can improve the
effluent quality significantly. However, fouling is still one of the main obstacles for
membrane operations, especially in the treatment of oily wastewater such as
produced water. There are several strategies to overcome the fouling issue, such as
selecting the appropriate pre-treatment, operating membranes at optimum
operating conditions, developing membranes with high hydrophilicity, and
applying simple, effective, and low-cost cleaning procedure.
