How is it discussed is related to the innovation phenomenon, where research and commercialization are the part of it. Researches about nanotechnology are not only done by nanotechnologist, but also researchers in the fields of business, law, and ethics. The discussion itself related to the specific character of nanotechnology innovation practices, both in research and commercialization activities. In the practice, nanotechnology innovation is not homogenous. Each of it has its own implication, related to whether nanotechnology opportunities can be maximally explored. The opportunities related to the nanotechnology features which also affect the interaction of researcher and commercialization actor. The interaction pattern to maximally explore nanotechnology opportunities is discussed in this study. It is found that there are eight factors to foster nanotechnology innovation: 1) identity construction, 2) nanotechnology laboratory, 3) nanotechnology researcher association, 4) construction of new research field, 5) nanotechnology journal, 6) network knowledge, 7) nanotechnology business alliance, and 8) formation of niche market. These factors to foster nanotechnology innovation is used as reference to see the practices of nanotechnology innovation in Indonesia, especially in Research Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (RCNN), Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), and Nano Center Indonesia (NCI). These practices are explored with interview to several nanotechnology researchers and commercialization actors in both organizations using ethnography methods. To comprehend the data, research publication by each nanotechnology researcher is also explored. Data analysis in this study is done refers to the premises of Latour (2005) who describes social phenomena. As a comparative, scores are given to each factor fulfilled by each researcher. In Indonesia, based on the nanotechnology innovation practices in RCNN ITB, it shows that there are several initiatives that have been done to foster the nanotechnology innovation, although the dominant practice tends to be conventional. On the other hand, Nano Center Indonesia has more holistic nanotechnology innovation pattern, but limited laboratory facilities can be a challenge to foster nanotechnology innovation. Without shifting, the practices in both places implies that nanotechnology opportunities will not be maximally explored. Keywords: nanotechnology innovation, research to commercialization interaction, fostering factors, research in university, research in R&D agency text
