Summary: | Architecture is inseparable from visual aspect as a way to abstract design ideas,
through visualization in the form of images. Images serve as a medium to represent
ideas and identities possessed by individuals. The development of digital
technology has caused changes in visualization techniques from time to time, from
manual to digital. Now, a method called post-digital visualization emerges in the
architectural practice. The meaning of post- itself is “after” as in postmodernism,
which appears as the antithesis of modernism. So, post-digital defines itself as
“after digital”, as an attempt to improve the deficiencies of the digital era.
However, the use of digital technology in the design process actually raises issues
regarding identity. This study aims to reveal the phenomenon of post-digital
visualization as an architecture representation within the architectural practice.
This research uses a qualitative method by taking an architectural studio as a
research subject. Through the study of documentation and visual analysis of postdigital visualizations images, it will discover how the designer can represent his
ideas and identity through the images. In addition, the discussion will continue in
the context of digital information, which affects the routines of design process in
architecture. This context was added to see the designer’s routine in sourcing and
publishing references, where designers present their ideas and identity to the
community and public. Based on the analysis, it was found that in representing
identity, there are processes, objectives, and visual elements that can construct the
designer’s identity through a post-digital collage. In addition, digital and online
media can explore the potential of collage as a medium of representation through
the act of sourcing and publishing. The digital information age has greatly
influenced the emergence of post-digital visualization phenomenon, and so it can
be said that this phenomenon does not replace digital visualization, but instead
enriches digital potential. Therefore, this research is expected to become a
reference in using post-digital visual representation to explore the potential ideas
and identities of designers in the architectural practice.
