This method relies on the differences in the surface properties of hydrophobic coal particles and hydrophilic inorganic gangue.

The samples of coal from AI layer in South Banko were collected to be tested using this oil agglomeration method. This coal is of low rank which responds poorly to oil agglomeration. This experiment studies the variables of oil agglomeration process related to ash reduction and filtration rate. These variables are: the type of oil including that with or without surfactants, quantity of oil, pulp density and the size of coal particles.

The presence of surfactants, drastically reduces the size of oil droplets and as a whole changes the interaction between oil droplets and coal particles. They adsorb at the oil-water interface and facilitate oil emulsification. Since they also absorb onto the coal surface once they are present at the oil-water interface, they facilitate the attachment of such droplets to coal surfaces, and it seems as if they changed the hydrophobic coal properties to be much better than before. On the other hand, the presence of surfactants causes the filtration rate to slower.

The result of the experiment shows that in order to get the optimum result for this agglomeration process, solar oil with surfactants, 30% oil, 5% pulp density and -35 +65 mesh coal fractions are to be used, so that the ash content can be reduced up to more than 60% with filtration rate of 0.09m1/second. text
