Description
Summary:Astaxanthin is an antioxidant which is very effective to inhibit free radicals so that it has high economic value. Chlorella vulgaris is a microalgae that has the potential to produce astaksantin. Sodium bicarbonate has been widely used as an inorganic source to increase biomass recovery but there are few investigation about the effect of this increase on astaxanthin productivity. In this experiment, C. vulgaris was grown in Bold Basal medium (BBM) by adding sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) as inorganic carbon source. The concentration of NaHCO3 added was 0,4 g/L; 0,8 g/L; and 1,2 g/L. Cultures were grown for 12 days with triplicate. The model used to estimate growth was the logistic model, while the model for estimating astaxanthin productivity was the Luedeking-Piret model. The experimental results showed that the productivity of biomass decreased with increasing concentrations of sodium bicarbonate added. The highest productivity resulted from a variation of 0.4 g / L with 0.45 mg / L/d. Based on the logistic model, the maximum biomass yield was 5,003 g / L in the NaHCO3 variation of 0.4 g /L with a growth rate of 0.77 / day. The highest estimation of astaxanthin productivity which was 0.092 mg / L per day was also found in the NaHCO3 0.4 g / L. The estimation results still need to be proven by further research because of differences in species and culture conditions with Pan-Utai et al. (2017) experiment. The Luedeking-Piret model showed that the synthesis of astaxanthin was partially correlated with microalgae growth. The value of parameter ? (growth correlation coefficient) and ? (non-growth correlation coefficient) in this experiment for control and variation of NaHCO3 0,4 g/L; 0,8 g/L; and 1,2 g/L was 0,018 and 0,003; 0,0158 and 0,00066; 0,014 and 0,001; 0,0127 and 0,0014 respectively.
