SOIL BEHAVIOUR STUDY ON VACUUM AND PRELOADING SOIL IMPROVEMENT PROJECT WITH FINITE ELEMENT PROGRAM

Soft clays are soils which have relatively low bearing capacity and high compressibility level. This leads to a problem where soft clays tend to consolidate in a very long period when pressure is applied. To prevent this from happening, the use of vacuum and preloading (combined) is one of the best...

INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/52945 Soft clays are soils which have relatively low bearing capacity and high compressibility level. This leads to a problem where soft clays tend to consolidate in a very long period when pressure is applied. To prevent this from happening, the use of vacuum and preloading (combined) is one of the best method to reduce consolidation time in soft clays. In this thesis, Abaqus CAE software is used to model a soil improvement project which uses vacuum-preloading with PVD as its method. There are three types of models : axisymmetric – single drain, plane strain – single drain, and plane strain – multi drain, in which Indraratna’s method of permeability conversion is used. An 80 kPa vacuum pressure is modelled by setting a negative pore pressure. Model verification is done by comparing model results with field monitoring reports in Kendal Industrial District (KIK) which consist of settlement and pore pressure observations. The results show that the model is able to replicate soil behaviours in the project location well, which includes settlement, pore pressure, strength gain of soils, and pressure distribution in PVDs. text
