The Influence of Gradation and Density Grade Variety to Drainage and Layer Coefficient of Aggregate Pavement, Muralia Hustim, 2002, Transportation Engineering, Magister Program of Civil Engineering, Institute of Technology Bandung.

There are two significant parameters in pavement design in AASHTO method; (both are) drainage coefficient (m) and layer coefficient (a), where both are influenced by gradation and relative density aggregate. Therefore, the research is focused on evaluating the influence of gradation and density grade variety to m and a values.

Types of pavement layer of which is investigated are base course with crushed stone and sub base course with sand stone. The type of gradation of which is used are gradation A for base course and gradation C for sub base course based on AASHTO specification. For gradation variety are used up limit gradation (BA), middle limit gradation (BT), and low limit gradation (BB).

And for density grade variety are used 100% and 98% (just for middle limit gradation). Determination of maximum dry density (y) and optimum water content (NO of each mixtures type is obtained by modified proctor test. Determination of structural strength value is obtained by CBR test and determination of drainage quality is obtained by permeability test of Falling Head method. Evaluation of the influence of gradation and density grade variety is based on analyzing m and a values.

Results of modified proctor test showed that the highest value of Yai obtained in middle limit gradation with y = 2,108 gr/cc for base course and 2,038 grfcc for sub base course. So is CBR test, with CBR value = 93,7% for base course and 76,5 for sub base course. In the permeability test, the highest value of permeability coefficient (k) obtained in low limit gradation (BB) with k = 1,2641 ft/hr and 0,1375 ft/hr for base course and sub base course. The analysis showed that in base course and sub base course, a value followed the change of CBR values so is mvalue to k value generally. Because of the decrease of density from 100% to 98%, CBR and a values also decreased, beside that the k value was increasing. And the m value was having increase in base course and constant in sub base course.
