Summary: | Real-time production monitoring system is a tool that enables management to collect and display information as production process is occurring at the shop floor. Production monitoring system has numerous positive impacts towards the whole production system, but monitoring systems using manual data collection methods have low data reliability and quality along with resulting in wasteful non-value added activity. This research aims to create an economical cloud-based real-time production monitoring system prototype for manual production systems so that it can be easy to implement in small and medium industries.
Prototype design is started by identifying functional and non-functional requirements followed by creating an architecture for the prototype. ESP8266 microcontroller and MFRC522 RFID sensor are used as hardware. Cloud services from Microsoft Azure are used for data processing and storage functions for the prototype: Azure IoT Hub handles data communication between cloud and the hardware devices, Azure Stream Analytics processes and records the exchanged data, and Azure SQL is used as database system. An external application Mode Dashboard is utilized to access and visualize data stored in the database.
Prototype testing with example case scenario shows that the prototype is capable to perform the main functionalities which are data collection, storage, and visualization. Installation cost of the prototype for a workstation with 2 data collection points is Rp162.000,-. Estimated minimum monthly operational cost is estimated to be Rp394.394,-, which can accommodate the monitoring of a line with 5 workstations with 800 products/day production rate. Testing results shows that prototype can be implemented towards real production systems with some slight adjustments towards the systems’ specific requirements.
