Summary: | The library collection is an important attraction in a library, but the facilities and
layout of the room are also important to be able to provide a serenity and comfort
atmosphere for the user activity in the library. A library at a university is one of the
important things that must be fulfilled which aims to support the student learning
process. The small number of visitors seen in the Library of the University of North
Sumatra is the reason for this design and research is conducted with a purpose to
provide comfort to visitors who come. This design and research uses a biophilic
design approach which examines that human beings love natural environments and
are at their optimal capacity while in them. This design approach aims to make
users get serenity and comfort in this library. The research method used is a
quantitative method with data collection techniques by questionnaire to understand
the comfort of this library based on biophilic design pattern. From the results of
testing the convenience of this library, there are eight aspects that are less
comfortable according to users, namely the surrounding natural scenery from
inside the room, indoor plants, the presence of sound from nature, dynamic / nonrigid furniture forms, the use of natural materials as furniture, the shape and
arrangement of furniture. and color, vision in the reading room, connection of
natural system in the library. These results become the focus of the design for the
reading room and library collections. The research results from the evaluation of
this library design are successful in providing comfort to this library with the
prospect pattern having the highest response with a score (451), lighting (448),
visual connection with nature (441), room comfort (437), connection with natural
systems (437), on-rhythmic sensors (432), complexity and order (432), mysterious
patterns (429), way finding (429), non-visual connection with nature (428),
connection with natural system (426), risk patterns (424), biomorphic shapes and
patterns (419), refuge patterns (395), and thermal and airflow variability patterns
