The existence of 2000-6000 sacks of timber waste per week is an indicator of
unsustainable production pattern.. This happened at the Furniture Industry Center
of Pasuruan City (FICP). So far, woodshavings produced by furniture SMEs has
only been used as firewood and ‘pediang’. As timber prices are increasing and
decline in sale, it’s urgent to update the pattern, one of which is through recycling.
Through ‘design for standardization and compatibility strategy’, it is aimed that
resources, materials, and products can be controlled to stay in the economic cycle
as long as possible, and minimize waste production.
With a combination of moulding and pressing techniques, FICP’s woodshavings
that no longer have solidity can be processed into ready-to-use materials (premodule) which are directed to be developed into modules that aimed to be applied
to room partitions and desk organizers. With this technique, a contoured premodule can be made with a minimum adhesive composition (aliphatic glue) allowed
is 10% and air drying technique. For 1 zigzag contoured pre-module measuring
15x15 cm it takes at least 2 workers with 3 days of workmanship. Based on the
simulation, the zigzag pre-module with an adhesive composition of 8.75% and
11.66% can withstand the load (force) in standing positions of ± 230 and 370 kg.
While in the sleeping position the estimated load was ± 50x3 kg and ± 80x3 kg. The
labor-intensive production model with mold investment is the most recommended.
Business units specialize in waste utilization are also recommended as a first step
towards a circular production pattern.
