Three experiments were done in this study. The first experiment, i.e. black liquor was concentrated about 30 - 40%, then carbonated and acidified by sulphuric acid, H2SO4 72 % until pH below 3. The obtained lignin precipitate was filtrated, washed and rinsed with water until free from acid, and then heated at 105 °C for 3 hours before characterized. In the second experiment, kraft lignin (LK) concentrations in PEGLK solution system were varied as: 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, 40%, 50% and heated at 50 °C for 2 hours. Then the hydroxyl number by acetylation with anhydrideacetare-pyridine solution with a ratio of 127 ml : 1000 ml of those varying system, were determined. After that the systems were titrated with standardized 0,5 N NaOH solution. The third experiment, polyurethane was synthesized with the exact amount of diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) wich needed refer the hydroxyl number from the PEG-LK system that was determined in the second experiment. Results from this research showed that there was typical peaks of polyurethane FTIR spectra. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and tensile strength tests showed that the glass transition temperature, Tg, and ultimate strength, e of polyurethane increased with increasing amount of lignin component in polyurethane. text
