Description
Summary:A dark sky at night is a prerequisite for astronomical observation, either using eyes as detector or using a telescope and its complementary instruments. Contrast or comparison of the brightness between the sky background and the astronomical object caused by uncontrolled articial light from city. The eort to save the sky from light pollution could impacting to astronomy and also saving the energy consumption, the human circadian cycle, and the ecosystem of nocturnal animals. This nal project presents analysis of the night light contribution in Bandung City and its eect on the quality of the astronomical sky at the Bosscha Observatory (BO), and also the propose of a dark sky rescue strategy that can be applied by individuals and the community in the public. The total articial light from various types of lamp usage in Bandung City contributes an average about 1,394,841 lumens/person. The redened value is applied to the Garstang (1986) light pollution model. The result from the model shows the zenith of BO has a sky brightness value about 19.3 magnitude per arc second square (mpass). Meanwhile, the night sky of BO towards Bandung City at a zenith distance of 55 is 18.7 mpass. In addition, the sky brightness from observations in 2018-2019 using the Sky Quality Meter has average about 19.160.08 mpass along year, which provides a limiting magnitude of the naked eye observation (NELM) is 4.815 0.45. The contribution of articial light dominated by light of vehicles, public facilities, residential houses, public street lighting, and billboards. The lumens can be reduced by applying the selection of lamp types and turning on the light in selected place and limited duration. Moreover, educating awareness to the public about the existence of a dark sky also needs to be implemented by OB to reduce light pollution.
