This thesis studies the possibility of using CORBA as a communication channel in building CSCW applications. By using CORBA, the problem of communication between applications can be handled more easily so that the developer of CSCW can focus on the application layer.<p align="justify"> <br /> <br /> FraCollA, a CORBA based framework, has been designed to support the development of CSCW. The design includes a specification, a system architecture, a class diagram, and collaboration diagrams. Basic functions of Messenger and Shared Document Editor ha§ been implemented to test the framework. The result of the implementation shows that the application can utilize CORBA as a middleware in handling communication problem, especially in building user/group management functions, maintaining group awareness, handling message passing and shared workspace. FraCollA can be used as a basic framework for the development of more complete framework and CSCW applications.<p align="justify"> <br /> <br /> FraCollA has been developed using Java Development Kit (JDK) 1.3 and Visibroker for Java 4 .5, and runs under MS Windows 98 operating system.
