Description
Summary:Abstract :
The survey of poisoning cases in several hospitals in West Java, using retrospective data from January 1999 to June 2001, had been carried-out. The results showed that the type of poisons were foods, either by natural toxin or by food contaminated by toxin-producing microorganisms (29.71%), household products (23.86%), drugs (19.57%), narcotics (17.57%), animal bites (3.14%), alcohol (2.29%), gases (1.43%), cosmetics (1.14%), and heavy metals (0.43%). Poisoning occurred due to lack of knowledge on poisons and hazardous substances, accident, suicide or drug abuse. These results also showed that, in general, public knowledge about poisons and hazardous substances as well as preventing and handling of victim before hospital admission are very limited.
