Summary: | The pulp and paper industry in Indonesia is one of the industries that
provides a significant contribution to the economy of Indonesia. But on the other
hand, the pulp and paper industry is also one of the industries that produces quite
harmful waste water which is quite dangerous and has the potential to have a
negative impact on the environment. The waste produced by the pulp and paper
industry is eventually disposed back into the environment which usually rivers. This
waste can cause serious problems and changes to the aquatic ecosystem. Therefore,
it is necessary to monitor that waste so that the level of environmental pollution due
to the disposal of the waste water to the environement can also be monitored.
So far, many pulp and paper industries, especially in Indonesia, still use
conventional methods to measure several parameters that must be measured in
their wastewater treatment plants. This manual method is done by taking samples
at the factory and testing these samples in the laboratory. This conventional method
is certainly very prone to human error. In addition, this conventional method
cannot detect any irregularities or measurement results that exceed the quality
standard limit on wastewater parameters that occur momentarily. Also, in 2018,
the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry issued a regulation requiring
several types of industries in Indonesia to use an online monitoring system at all
times during their wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). Therefore, it is necessary
to design a system that is able to perform online monitoring functions at any time.
In this online monitoring system for pulp and paper industry wastewater,
the pH parameter value is one of the parameter values that must be measured. To
measure pH parameters in this online monitoring system a suitable electrode or
probe sensor is used for measuring the pH parameter. The results of measurements
using these automatic sensors can later be viewed and displayed via an online
monitoring platform so that the results can be observed by users, pulp and paper
mill operators.4
The final result of the design and implementation of this system is a
measurement module that can perform real-time pH measurements. This pH
parameter measurement module system uses the concept of the Internet of Things
system or commonly known as IoT. The measurement module measures the pH of
wastewater every 1 hour. This online monitoring system is also able to provide
alerts for measured pH parameters that exceed the quality standard to users via email. In addition, the measurement module also features a WiFi connection setting
which makes it easy for users to select and set the desired WiFi connection. The
measurement module also has an offline storage feature to store the pH
measurement data when there is a problem on the internet network. The panel box.
a part of the pH measurement module, also has water resistance IP standards that
make this device have the ability to be placed in an outdoors open area and Save
to rainy weather condition. Device has been tested to fulfill those functions.
