The majority of buildings in Indonesia, more specifically in Padang are located on soft soils. The two major problems of buildings on soft soils are large settlement and low bearing capacity. Soil improvement using cement and lime as additives were studied in this research.<p align=\"justify\"> <br /> The soil sample which was used in this soil stabilization research was taken from Jl Khatib Sulaiman Padang. Its physical and mechanical properties such as unconfined compressive strength and consolidation parameters were determined in the laboratorium test. The tests followed ASTM Standards.<p align=\"justify\"> <br /> Three additives contents were used, 5% , 10% and 15% with respect to dry weight of soil, with four different curing times of 0, 3, 7 and 14 days. The two kinds of additive were mixed with the soil separataly and the effect of curing time were observed. The result of the two additive were then compared.<p align=\"justify\"> <br /> The plasticity index of the soil was 29.62%. After lime and cement stabilizations the plasticity indexes decreased with increasing additve contents.<p align=\"justify\"> <br /> Compaction tests on original soil gave the maximum dry density of 1.274 gr/cm3 at the optimum moisture content of 31.8%. <br /> After mixing with cement, the maximum dry density increased and the optimum moisture content decreased with increasing cement content. After mixing with lime, on the contrary, the maximum dry density decreased and the optimum moisture content increased.<p align=\"justify\"> <br /> The unconfined compressive strength increased with increasing cement content in soil cement mixture, but they increased from 0 to 10% lime contents, and decreased for 15% lime content, which can be said that the optimum lime content 10%.
