Description
Summary:High voltage equipment must always be kept in optimal condition in order to work in normal conditions. Partial Discharge (PD) measurement is a very effective method for monitoring the isolation conditions of a high voltage equipment. PD measurement using the UHF method is to measure the waves generated as a result of the partial discharge which propagates from inside the PD source out of the insulation material. The propagation of EM waves produced by PD can be detected using sensors, one of which is an antenna. In this study, the design, simulation and fabrication of an antenna as a sensor to detect partial discharge was carried out. The designed antenna is then optimized for bandwidth using the Matching Impedance method with the addition of lumped element components (capacitors and inductors). Impedance Matching functions as an impedance match between the antenna and the transmission line. When the antenna and transmission line are matched, it will minimize the energy reflected by the antenna. There are four impedance matching configurations that are simulate and the antenna is selected which has the most optimal bandwidth value. This antenna is designed with the FR4_epoxy substrate type which has dimensions of length and width of the substrate are 80mm and 30mm, thickness is 1.6mm. The antenna is designed in the frequency range 300 MHz - 3 GHz. The 3D-HFSS software is used to design the antenna. The antenna that has been designed is then implemented on the printed circuit board (PCB) material and then measurements are made using a vector network analyzer (VNA) to determine the antenna characteristics. Antenna characteristics which include return loss (RL), bandwidth and VSWR show conformity results based on simulation results and measurement results. The three antenna designs have RL ? - 10dB and VSWR ? 2. The antennas that have been created are then tested to detect PD in aerial insulation using a needle-plate electrode.
