Description
Summary:The concept of electric and magnetic is an important concept in learning physics, but research that focuses on the trajectory motion misconception of charged particles is rarely being done. The purpose of this study was to develop a four-tier test instrument and use it to identify student misconceptions about the trajectories motion of charged particles in the influence of electric and magnetic fields. This study uses the 4D model with steps that is; define, design, develop, and disseminate, which are limited to the development stage. The instrument developed has been tested on a limited test to 15 physics graduate students of the Bandung Institute of Technology in 2018, 2019, and 2020 class. The results research showed that the development of four-tier test instrument developed could identify student misconceptions level on the trajectory motion of charged particles in the influence of electric fields and magnetic fields. This instrument has the potential to be used as a diagnostic instrument that can reveal misconceptions. In addition, it was found that answer choices with image display was preferred over vector and the level of not understanding the concept requiring vector analysis is very high. This shows that vector analysis is not familiar or not often used in solving problems. Respondents prefer on images maybe because they are visualized, so easier to see by the eye than the vectors that need to be imagined. Based on this, the ability of vector analysis and discussion about the motion of charged particles with the kinematic quantities contained therein using the concept of electric force and magnetic force need to be improved.
