ANALYSIS OF THE EFFECT OF SEAT STIFFNESS ON BUS PASSENGER HEAD INJURY ON FRONTAL CRASH

The population of Indonesia always increases every year. From 2015 to 2019, the population growth with average of 1.06% per year. This increase was followed by an increase in the number of motorized vehicles, including buses, which reached 2.3 million in 2014 and continued to increase to 2.5 million...

This increase was followed by an increase in the number of motorized vehicles, including buses, which reached 2.3 million in 2014 and continued to increase to 2.5 million in 2018. Unfortunately, this was also followed by high number of bus accidents in Indonesia which from 2014 to 2018 the number is always over 2000 times. This is very worrying considering the bus is a vehicle that carry many people. One type of bus accident that often occurs and causes many deaths is a frontal collision. In this study, the authors performed a sled test to simulate the condition of a passenger during a frontal collision. The author examined the effect of seat stiffness on head injuries (Head Injury Criterion) experienced by bus passengers by varying the thickness of the seat back’s connection plate, seat belts, and the given acceleration. Seat modeling was done using Solidwork software and simulation was carried out using LS-Prepost and LS-Dyna software. The simulation process was carried out by following the FMVSS 208 and UN R80 regulations. Seat stiffness affects the resulting HIC15 indirectly. The effect of seat stiffness depends on the seatbelt configuration. In seats without seatbelt and seats with three-point seatbelt, the HIC15 value tends to increase as the seat stiffness increases. Meanwhile, for seats with two-point seat belts, the HIC15 value tends to decrease. text
