In achieving its maximum function, the exhibition is a vital aspect. The exhibition layout, collection placement, circulation, visitor flow, and means of supporting presentation are still obstacles encountered in museums in Indonesia, including theMuseum of North Sumatra. This museum has not yet intensified its exhibition space so those common problems are found in museums with traditional concepts. Some of these problems include the layout of the exhibition are not well ordered, as well as circulation flow is not maximized. North Sumatra itself is a forum for eight ethnic groups that are rich in diversity. Therefore, the State Museum of North Sumatra Province requires an approach that must be applied to optimize the presentation of an educational and informative exhibition, namely with a narrative and interactive spatial approach.Building stories in the presentation of the exhibition is significant for building communication between visitors and objects. The narrative in architecture creates meaning through experience. Through narration, exhibition stories are easily conveyed through the context, content, scenarios, messages, and experiences of visitors. In applying these five aspects, visitors will feel part of the story and experience firsthand. This experience will be born with interactive means that support the narration presented. In conducting this research, the method used is a qualitative method summarized in design thinking. Through the first and second stages of design thinking, namely, empathize and define are carried out to understand the problems in the arrangement of the exhibit at the Museum of North Sumatra. Province and to understand the narrative spatial approach obtained through observation, interviews, and literature studies. After finding the problem, the next step is to ideate and prototype to explore new ideas and design updates as problem-solving. It includes the application of a narrative spatial approach that focuses on the preparation of new exhibition content, plotting, determining the dramatic arc, determining the concept of presentation, narrative media to theestimated time of the visit. At the ideate and prototype stages, a case study was carried out, namely the Nias ethnic exhibition. Then it ends with the evaluation stage, which is an assessment conducted through a questionnaire to certain parties as an evaluation. This research produces a spatial planning process by applying a narrative approach that can build stories of ethnicity in the exhibition room of the Museum of North Sumatra through content, plots, concepts, and narrative media. With a narrative layout, the exhibition experience will be maximized by presenting the meaning of space that will build a detailed narrative. This is evidenced by the results of the comparative evaluation, between the existing exhibit and the exhibition which have implemented a narrative spatial design. The exhibitionwith a narrative layout is in the "very good" category compared to the existing exhibition. The acquisition of this value apart from the exhibition display, it is also due to the diversity of exhibition media that can build a more optimal narrative space. When visitors play a role and become part of the story, information, education, entertainment, and the message to be conveyed will be easier to understand. Thus, creating a museum exhibition space with a narrative and interactive layout text
