Summary: | The shift in social meaning through the design of the Sundanese Siger is an
invisible phenomenon but its existence is felt in Sundanese traditional bridal
make-up activities. This meaning appears in the value of existence. In terms
of object, the value of existence has shifted from being used by Sundanese
aristocrats to being used by ordinary Sundanese people. As a manifestation
of this shift since the 1970s, the Siger Sunda design has undergone a
dynamic form until the 2010s. This research uses historical methods
consisting of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography.
The discourse analysis approach is used to dissect the symbolic forms of an
object. Discourse analysis explores objects by analyzing the actions that
underlie human behavior patterns in oral and written communication.
Qualitatively, in discourse analysis there are ways to combine each
interaction through various symbols. This interaction aims to display the
social identity that applies to a community group. The purpose of this
research is to identify the social order shifts in the life of the Sundanese
aristocrats that appear in the Sundanese Siger design. The results of this
study indicate that the Sundanese Siger initially appeared as a symbol of the
highest social status in Sundanese society. Then, entering the contemporary
period the position of the aristocracy shifted after the proclamation made the
Indonesian state as one unit. This also affects the use of the Sundanese Siger
which has experienced standardization. These standards can be analyzed in
terms of the materials used, weight, shape and ornament. This
standardization emerged based on an agreement between individual makeup, Sundanese bridal make-up professional organizations, and the New
Order government.
