This abundant solid waste containing 40%-mass cellulose, 27% hemicelluloses and lignin is potential for renewable energy and chemical resources. Studies to develop processes for utilization of this solid waste have been conducted at Department of Chemical Engineering ITB. One of these researches is the production of furfural from ErB through acid hydrolysis.

The present researches dealt with the development a technique to improve furfural yield, based on the fact that furfural may undergo further degradation during hydrolysis. In order to remove furfural from the reaction mixture as soon as possible, a steam stripping technique has been developed. A kinetic study showed that the furfural yield might be as high as 150 g/kg raw material in the absence of furfural degradation.

In this study, hydrolysis was conducted at a temperature of about 150 °C at a digester of 2 or 20 L. When a certain length of hydrolysis time had been attained (2-4 hours), vapor was withdrawn slowly from the digester and injected into a distillation column for furfural separation. The flow rate of furfural vapor from the digester could be adjusted using a valve and an injection of steam int o the digester.

This steam stripping technique gave a furfural yield up to 95 g/kg. Although this yield was still lower than the expected value of 150 glkg, it was already much higher than that from the convention technique of 30 g/kg. The rate of vapor withdrawal from the digester might be a key factor to make a further improvement.

text
