THE ROLE OF RELIGION IN DEVELOPMENT: A CASE STUDY OF THE MANIFESTATION OF RELIGIOUS TEXTS IN AL-ITTIFAQ

The issue of religion and development has become a debate both among students, practitioners and development policy makers. There has been a development of the substance of the debate, which initially focused on debates about the classical developmentalist assumptions regarding the relationship between religion and development, into a debate about the appropriate method to explain the relationship between religion and development. Religion is seen only in terms of institutions and institutional activities because of the difficulty in proving how religious teachings are manifested. This study aims to show how religious teachings are manifested in life and play a role in development. The research was conducted on Al-Ittifaq, which is known as a pesantren that runs agricultural product businesses, and reveals what Al-Ittifaq really is, how religious teachings are manifested there, and its role in the development that occurs there. Actor Network Theory (ANT) is used as an approach as well as a method in this study to see the relationships that exist in Al-Ittifaq and see the dynamics of tranformation and development that occur there by tracing vegetable objects which are the main commodity in the agricultural product business there. The results of the tracing were then linked to the religious texts identified from the available interview data. This research shows that Al-ittifaq is an association consisting of association of pesantren, agricultural, agricultural product business, and animal husbandr,, which have the aim of achieving beneficiary for fellow humans. Religious texts play a role as a source of social capital, a driving force, guidance, and motivation for humans to act. The Kiai's wisdom plays a role in the formation, development and maintenance of this association. The object transformation indicate an effort to form, maintain, and re-form associations there. This research is expected to contribute to enriching the literature on development studies, especially related to issues of religion and development.
