THERMODYNAMIC ANALYSIS OF CALCIUM LOOPING CARBON CAPTURE APPLICATION IN CLINKER PRODUCTION PROCESS

CO2 emissions have negative impacts on the environment, one of which is global warming. The cement production process accounts for 5% of global CO2 emissions. The increase in CO2 emissions from the cement production process continues. Carbon capture has potential to be the solution to reduce CO2...

INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/54252 CO2 emissions have negative impacts on the environment, one of which is global warming. The cement production process accounts for 5% of global CO2 emissions. The increase in CO2 emissions from the cement production process continues. Carbon capture has potential to be the solution to reduce CO2 emissions from cement factories. The carbon capture method that will be discussed in this final project is calcium looping. Calcium looping consists of two simple reactors consisting of a carbonator and calciner. Calcium looping material can be used as raw material for cement. The analysis was carried out by modeling and simulating the cement production process at Factory Pabrik V Indarung PT. Semen Indonesia. Simulations were carried out with Aspen Plus Ver. 11 software. The simulation of the application of calcium looping is carried out by adding carbonator and calciner components and making changes to the system as needed. The reduction in CO2 emissions after the calcium looping was applied is 37% for the coal fired system and 99% for the hydrogen fueled system. Fuel requirements increased by 94 kg/kg clinker for coal fired systems and 154 kg/kg clinker for hydrogen fueled systems. In addition, the increase in the ratio of the mole flow rate of CaCO3 added to the calcium looping to the mole flow rate of CO2 emissions (Fo/FCO2) reduces the amount of heat for calcium looping calciner and clinker production kiln. The cost of clinker production, after applying the carbon tax, for coal-fired and hydrogen-fueled ones is obtained respectively at 131.21 USD and 249.18 USD. text
