A COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS (CFD) SIMULATION FOR OIL LEAKAGE FROM DAMAGED SUBMARINE PIPELINE USING ANSYS FLUENT

Oil leakage caused by submarine pipeline damage is one of the fatal accidents that might be happen in the oil and gas industry. Besides being able to disrupt the production process, this incident can also cause various side effects that are difficult to overcome and can have fatal consequences, such as environmental impacts. The objective of this study is to study the oil flows from damaged submarine pipelines to the sea surface using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Volume of Fluid (VOF) methods. These two methods were combined and simulated using Ansys Fluent software. Data generated by the simulations carried out in the study are the time taken by the leaking oil to the sea level and the maximum horizontal distance that the oil reaches to the sea level. These two data are then processed and presented as design recommendations for oil containment boom installations that can minimize the spread of oil leaks so the impact of the incident can be minimized. text
